The Vice President of Product Management is responsible for driving the strategic vision and tactical execution for software product development.  This role leads the development of the product roadmap prioritizing initiatives based on strategic value, customer need, and revenue opportunity.  This role works with the executive team to ensure that product investments across the portfolio are aligned with SMG’s overall business strategy.  The position will have a matrixed reporting relationship to the CIO and CEO.  The Vice President of Product Management leads a staff of Product and UX professionals who partner with the engineering organization to bring new capabilities to market.  The Product team is responsible for balancing trade-offs between speed-to-market, resource commitment, and customer value.

This position can be based in our Boston office or our headquarters in Kansas City.


  • Lead the Product Council which consists of C-Suite leaders to define product priorities and the underlying product roadmap to ensure that capability investments are aligned with SMG’s overall business objectives.
  • Lead Product Management and User Experience functions in an agile software development environment with a focus on delivering minimally viable products in an iterative environment.
  • Evaluate product opportunities based on a deep understanding of our customer needs, our market competitors, technology trends, and the capability to deliver incremental revenue. Provide executive level recommendations and/or business cases where applicable. 
  • Engage with customers, understand their needs, and lead the product team to collect feedback systematically throughout the product development process.
  • Partner with IT leadership to ensure effective product delivery balancing customer needs, resource capabilities, project schedules, and technical constraints.
  • Provide thought leadership and direction to the product and development teams as they work to create new applications and re-engineer existing capabilities to be delivered.
  • Oversee custom client development projects driving prioritization across clients while maximizing the re-use of new capabilities.
  • Plan and manage budgets related to staff, customer research, third-party software, and research and development.
  • Lead pilot and prototype activities designed to “fail-fast” and vet new product and capabilities prior to making large scale technology investments.
  • Partner with Client Insights, Marketing, and Sales to bring new products to market smoothly and effectively. Ensure product positioning, pricing, and internal training activities are planned and executed effectively to support new product/capability release.
  • Provide ongoing leadership, direction, mentoring, and constructive feedback to team members, facilitating their training, and nurturing their ongoing professional development.
  • Act as chief product evangelist internally and externally to explain SMG’s product priorities, future roadmap, and how we deliver value to customers.



  • 10+ years working experience in a product and portfolio management role within a software development environment.
  • 5+ years team management experience
  • Demonstrated experience building best practices for product management and program management functions.
  • Experience assessing businesses, industries and driving innovation to generate new/adjacent sources of revenue growth in mature businesses.
  • Ability to adapt leadership style to influence change in a diverse business environment (mix of growth and mature businesses).
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with large teams to improve/influence/transform business outcomes (revenue, cost, quality and speed).
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing through presentations and individual discussions with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience in vendor and contract management.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in CX measurement approaches including Qualitative and Quantitative Methods.
  • Experience in a multi-unit retail environment.
  • Advance degree, MBA.
  • Experience in both SaaS and Mobile app software development.
  • Experience in both B2B and B2C markets.
